What Edge Does on Its Own
- Session restore: Settings → Start, home, and new tabs can open the tabs from your previous session.
- Reopen closed tabs: Ctrl+Shift+T (Cmd+Shift+T on Mac), or History → Recently closed.
- Workspaces: separate sets of tabs, each in its own window, saved to your Microsoft account.
- Sleeping tabs: Edge unloads tabs you haven’t used for a while to save memory.
- Tab groups and vertical tabs, as in other Chromium browsers.
Microsoft retired Collections. Since Edge 145 you can’t add items, and from Edge 149 (June 2026) Collections is no longer available. Microsoft suggests Favorites for links and Workspaces for active tabs.
Where Edge’s Tools Fall Short
Workspaces need a Microsoft account and keep only the current state of each workspace, with no earlier versions to go back to. Session restore keeps one previous session.
None of Edge’s tools export a set of tabs to a file you can open in another browser.
How BelayTab Fits Into Edge
Install BelayTab from Edge Add-ons. It saves windows as named sessions, snapshots them every 5 minutes and when a window closes, and keeps the last 20 versions of each session. Tab groups keep their names and colours.
If you used Collections to park tabs, save those tabs as BelayTab sessions instead. They stay on your computer, and you can export them as JSON, CSV, a URL list or HTML bookmarks.

What happened to Collections in Edge?
Microsoft retired them. Edge 145 stopped you adding items, and Collections is no longer available from Edge 149, released on 4 June 2026. Microsoft offers a move to Favorites.
How do I restore tabs in Edge after a crash?
Reopen Edge and press Ctrl+Shift+T, or use History → Recently closed. If Edge didn’t restore your session, open BelayTab’s Recovery screen and restore the latest snapshot.
Should I use Edge Workspaces or BelayTab?
Use Workspaces if you want live, separate sets of tabs tied to your Microsoft account. Use BelayTab if you want automatic snapshots, earlier versions and export files. They work side by side.
